OPENING DAY
This Saturday is the official start of the summer sailing season and the Opening
Day race will be hosted by Royal Ulster Yacht Club. Starting times are posted on
the Club notice board and racing will be around the RUYC marks. Give yourself
plenty of time to sail around to the RUYC starting line.
After Opening Day there will be regular Club racing on Sunday afternoons and
Tuesday evenings. Food will be available after sailing on Tuesday evenings.
Points racing does not start until Tuesday evening.
LASER ULSTERS
The weekend after next Ballyholme Yacht Club will be hosting the Laser Ulster
Championships. Up to 100 boats are expected in the Laser 4.7, Radial and full
rigs. With BYC boasting so many top class sailors, both in the experts and the
newcomers, it is hoped that there will be a full turnout from Club sailors. Get
your entry in before Friday to qualify for discount. If you want to be involved
in the event either onshore or on the water, contact sailtaylor@hotmail.com and
offer your services!
DIVING IN PORTAFERRY
The BYC Diving Section enjoyed their annual 'Trainee & Rusty Divers Weekend' at
Portaferry last weekend. Fortified by a splendid fry from the Barholme hostel,
Saturday's strong, cold easterlies didn't deter, and a good number of divers
dived the Pins and the Outer Lees wrecks. Meanwhile the six trainees did well
with their first shore and boat dives under the tutelage of their instructors.
The Sunday brought better visibility underwater, and the divers surprised even
themselves with their enthusiasm for more dives. These were much enjoyed and
found to be very restorative after the efforts into the wee hours in the local
hostelries that had followed a jovial supper of great food and good craic at the
Portaferry Sailing Club the night before.
